Maitenance Worker - Utilities Division

Position Purpose
 
Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and related service activities related to streets, grounds, and utility systems in their assigned division. The Maintenance Worker I (MWI) receives immediate supervision from upper level supervisory staff or as otherwise assigned by the Director of Public Works. Additionally, the MWI may receive technical and functional supervision from positions assigned to the Maintenance Worker II class. The MWI has no supervisory responsibility. 
 
 
Essential Duties and Areas of Responsibility
 
Examples of essential duties and responsibilities for MWI may include, but is not limited to:
 

  • Operate construction equipment and power tools such as dump truck, front-end loader, backhoe, grader, paving machine, compressors, jack hammers, paint sprayers, sandblasters, concrete saws, sewer-rodder, mower, edger and blower; maintain hand tools and assigned equipment; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
 
  • Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
 
  • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
 
  • Perform snow removal and ice control duties as required.
 
  • Follows safety policies and procedures.
 
  • Reports all unsafe working conditions and acts to the supervisor.
 
  • Reports all accidents to supervisor immediately.
 
  • Follows recognized safe work practices.
 
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Other important MWI responsibilities and duties:
 
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve com­plaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Respond to after-hours calls; prepare for and confront emergency conditions as necessary to maintain efficient and effective city services.

Examples of Duties

Essential duties and responsibilities for MWI when assigned to the Utilities Division:

  • Perform regular inspection of water and wastewater lines, manholes, and sewer drain fields.
  • Operate sewer cleaning equipment and video inspection equipment.
  • Take regular readings regarding water production activities; record data related to readings at wells, pumps and elevated storage tanks.
  • Check/test equipment at water wells for proper functioning.
  • Maintain and repair all valves and fire hydrants; install new fire hydrants and test stations.
  • Repair water/sanitary sewer mains and services. 
  • Install new sewer and water services; tap the water main and establish connection to sanitary sewer.
  • Check lift station equipment for proper functioning; record readings on electric equipment; operate generator lift stations during power outages. 
  • Assist in repairs and maintenance of sewer and water facilities. including rebuild and maintain pumps; grease and tighten packing; clean and grease equipment, pumps and meters as appropriate. Maintain preventive and reactive maintenance records regarding equipment and machinery as necessary.
  • Collect water samples for various testing procedures daily.
  • Clean and paint wells.
  • Obtain and record water meter readings; post late bill notices and shut off past due services.
  • Address customer complaints for items such as rusting or discolored water, a bad odor or low water pressure.
  • Record locations of services and other equipment for mapping purposes; locate and mark mains, valves, services and B-boxes for construction purposes.

Typical Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:
 
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
 
Experience
No experience required. Experience in general maintenance work is preferred.
 
Training
Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
 
License or Certificate: 
A valid State of Illinois Driver’s License is required upon hire. A valid Illinois CDL Driver’s License is required within six (6) months from the date of hire.
